Fast paced calc class with lots of homework and quizzes. Definitely don't take this unless you've taken calc before. Grade averages depend a lot on the TA, but mostly the tests average is a C+. If you do the homework and go to class, it is definitely possible to get an A

IF YOU DIDN'T TAKE CALC IN HIGH SCHOOL DO NOT TAKE 1210! I would highly recommend taking 1190 if you didn't take calc before. The reason why I didn't take 1190 is because I found out after the withdraw date passed that the comm school would accept 1190. I had Rostislav Akhmechet. He would try to make jokes to lessen the awkward silence in class. He taught as if everyone in the class already took calc. There were a couple of students who were in the same boat that I was. I tried going to office hours but when I asked a question I felt as if he was giving me "DUH" answers as if I took calc before. It didn't matter how many times I would explain to him that I did not calc before, he would still answer my questions with more math terms that I didn't understand. I know that he is very knowledgeable about the material but he is just not a very good teacher. For assignments, we had to do about 2 or 3 webassigns before quizzes and tests. There were also written homework, which he was more lenient towards. There are 2 exams and the final. Good luck if you take this course in general.

This class is taught by a variety of grad students, so depending on who you get it can matter a lot. Everyone is given the same test, but if your teacher sucks then it's way much harder. I had taken calc before, so I didn't have to do too much work, but if I hadn't then I would have definitely struggled a lot more. I would be wary taking this class without any calc experience, because it really depends on the teacher. Also, the are several online homework assignments a week that can be a little tedious, but manageable. The midterms were not too difficult, but the final was very much unlike what we had learned in some ways. I would not take this class if you dont have calc experience unless you have to.

If you have taken calc before this class is super easy. even if you havent its not bad. there are 2 midterms and a final, your TA could give written hw and quizzes or not, we convinced our instructor to stop giving them and to restructure the class half way through the semester. If you need to fill a math/calc requirement this is the one you shuould take. The grading on exams is super annoyingly strict and is not communicated well but the exams arent terrible.

I had Prof Sonkin, but for some reason, he wasn't listed. He's a pretty good professor, but he's very quite and kind of hard to understand. He's much better in office hours if you really need the help. As far as the course is concerned, it's fairly easy to understand material, if you've taken any calculus in high school, it's essentially the same material, but the individual questions on exams are much harder. Good luck.

Do whatever you can to take this class somewhere other than UVA if you aren't coming in with a very strong background in calculus. The department is really not great and the tests are the same for every class so if your teacher isn't good you will not do well.

Do not take this class with Professor Sonkin. I did well in the course, but no thanks to this professor. Thank god that the homework and tests are all done departmentally. He did not prepare us well for the tests at all. You must go back through the book to learn if you have this professor because his lectures will not teach you anything. Honestly, you'd probably be better off not even attending his lectures. Otherwise, if you have taken calculus before then the webassigns are easy and the tests aren't too bad.

This class is really easy if you've already taken calculus, but I know a lot of people who haven't and most struggled. It's kind of hit or miss with which instructor you get, but mine was really chill and made sure everyone understood the material (not every instructor was as good). Most of the grade is three big tests, two midterms and a final, and there isn't two much homework besides Webassign outside of it. Again, a little hit or miss, but it is required for a lot of majors and programs, and I've heard it is easier than regular calc.
