I would only recommend this class if you want to learn about music. I took this class expecting it to be an easy GPA booster but I was proved wrong. Your grade depends on the TA's and most of them just give straight B's on everything. It's an easy B but hard B+,A-. I would say it's a very hard A due to the strict grading by the TA'S. Professor Karl was awesome. His way of lecturing is unique and he really get's you into the material. I enjoyed learning new stuff about music but the grading got me very disappointed.

DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. I came into this course thinking it would be an easy A but it is not. I got straight B's for all the assignments so far. This used to be an easy class but they changed the syllabus and now its almost impossible to end up with an A. However, Karl is pretty chill.

this is one of those "easy" classes the teacher found out everyone was taking because someone said it was easy and now they're taking it way too seriously. the first couple discussions were fun and interesting, and now the TA is forcing group discussion of the (numerous) readings that aren't addressed in lecture and that no one does. lectures get very repetitive and boring, and aren't necessary for the assignments (2 sonic descriptions - one 2 page essay and a multimedia project) or the midterm and exam, where he specified that our answers should be rooted in course readings, not course lectures. this would be a good class to take credit/no credit, but a lot of unnecessary work for an "easy class" #tcf2016

One of the best classes I have taken at UVA so far! There is not a lot of work at all. Your grade is composed of an early semester writing assignment (15%), a take-home midterm in which you write three reponse essays (25%), a multimedia project which I really enjoyed (25%), a take-home final exam similar to the midterm (25%), and participation (10%). Discussion was usually very interesting because I enjoyed learning how different genres became popular throughout history and tying them in with historical events. 10/10 would recommend.

TAKE. THIS. CLASS. This is in my top 3 classes at UVA. Miller is an amazing lecturer and really cares about the material. Speaking of the material, it's amazing! Remember the scene from School of Rock where he gives the kids music to listen to for homework? That's exactly what happens in this class. Some of the early stuff is hard to get into, but about halfway through the semester you start getting into music you've undoubtedly heard before and it's great. Just take this class. You'll thank me later.

This is easily the best elective I have ever taken. Professor Miller has an incredible ability to find music that most of the class would find interesting regardless of era and tie it seamlessly into the lecture for the day. Professor Miller was also very clearly excited about the material, and that, combined with his sense of humor, meant that I was almost never bored during lectures. Miller was easily in the top 5 professors I've had during my four years at UVA. The material was accessible and interesting (even some of the more theoretical readings), and the out-of-class assignments were very manageable. TAKE THIS CLASS.
