A great class and a great professor. A lot of reading though!

Professor Lynch is one of the best professors I have met in UVa, I have been taking his 2 classes and all found it very enjoyable, and at his office hours, he is so nice and warm with all your questions, even not related to his class, and he is still very happy to talk to you and always being very helpful, and respect your experience and options very much. one of the best respectful professor in the UVa
Very interesting class. All assignments are open notes / book.
About 200 pages of reading per week, 2 in-class exams, 1 take home paper, and one in-class final. Papers are graded hard, but the material is interesting and Lynch is a great lecturer so that class is worthwhile if you have the time.
I would highly recommend taking this course with Lynch. He is articulate, enthusiastic and shares many great stories to give an interesting context to Russian history.
He grades the essays fairly but you have to work for it.
Very good course. Lynch is extremely knowledgeable and peppers his lectures with personal anecdotes. He expects a lot on the tests, but they are entirely open book and open note so they are fairly manageable.
