Review Summary Updated April 05, 2026

This course is a straightforward, low-effort way to knock out a general education requirement since high grades hinge on take-home essays and treating the heavy reading load as entirely optional. You will do fine just by attending lectures and capturing the main arguments, but expect unapologetically liberal, politically charged instruction that frequently drifts into long, provocative tangents about race, culture, and social justice. While many students leave feeling genuinely challenged and entertained by the eye-opening perspective, others find the delivery rambling, the TA grading arbitrary, and the overall vibe uncomfortably biased. Take it if you want an easy, high-reward class that flips how you see everyday society, but look elsewhere if you prefer neutral, structured lectures or a strictly academic approach.

This is such an easy class, and interesting too. I definitely recommend it. There is a lot of reading assigned, but its not necessary to read it because Handler highlights all the important points during lecture. GO TO LECTURE. Take good notes because they will help you on the take home essay tests. I wouldn't take this class if you're not a good writer.

Professor Handler just pushes his ideals on everyone in the class. The topics discussed are interesting, but he muddles them with his political ideology. The papers are relatively straight forward, but they are looking for the answer they want, not necessarily a subjective answer that makes an argument. I would steer clear of the class and professor.

TAKE THIS CLASS! Handler is awesome. All take home tests and he drops the lowest one. Grading depends on your TA, but overall it's an easy course. Some of the readings are complicated, but he goes over the readings so don't worry about those!

This class was exceptional. Handler is fantastic lecturer and really opens the students' minds to the techniques and subjects of Anthropology. He only assigns reading homework and only grades in the year are discussion, three tests (lowest dropped), and the final.

I personally thought the class was a lot more overrated. For a class that fulfills a non-western perspective, I felt as if we focused more on the United States. I do however recommend the class if you want an easy A/B.
