If you’ve taken Elzinga’s Micro course, I definitely recommend Coppock’s class. The layout is pretty much the same: some readings due every week, some TA quizzes, clicker questions, 2 midterms, and a multiple choice final. Make sure you go over both the textbook and the PowerPoints. I also thought this course was a bit easier than Elzinga’s as well. Coppock is also a much more engaging lecturer in my opinion. For an intro course, you definitely get a lot out of it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Prof. Coppock's class. He doesn't lecture so much as he does act; it's as if he's performing his lecture each time you come to class and it having a really fun time doing it. He breaks down topics pretty simply and makes complex problems easy to understand. He does, however, expect you to remember some pretty specific stuff from lectures from time to time. I ended the class with an A due to dutch knockout, would have been an A- without it. This class is definitely worthwhile because it will make you a better informed citizen, particularly when listening to and interpreting the news. Don't rely on dutch knockout and don't focus too much on doing practice problems; if you understand the theory and why things are the way that they are, you will do just fine.

Take macro with Coppock!!! He is such an incredible lecturer and makes the material so interesting. He is funny and organized, so his lectures are fun and very easy to follow. He also wrote the textbook, which is helpful because he knows exactly what kind of material you are getting inside and outside of lecture. Coppock cares a lot about his students, and his exams are written and graded very fairly. It's not necessarily in easy course, but Professor Coppock and his TAs make sure to give you the tools you need to do well. Coppock also gets really great TAs. I loved mine and all my friends in the class really enjoyed their TAs too. Even if you aren't pre-comm or majoring in econ, I would recommend taking Coppock's class because I just really enjoyed going to lecture every week. You learn so much valuable information about how the global economy works and you have a lot of fun while doing it.

I am obsessed with professor Coppock. After taking micro with Elzinga, I strongly disliked economics; coppock managed to completely change my perspective on economics with his engaging lectures, great personality and his ability to break down difficult topics. Professor Coppock is an amazing teacher who truly loves his job. Although challenging at times, I think this class is very worthwhile and it is incredibly necessary that you take it with Lee Coppock. He is one of the best professors I have had. I will say its super unreasonable that tests are >90% of our overall grade and the final alone is 50% of your overall grade. I got a low B on the final and it dropped my final grade from an A to a B+. Really sucks.

Make sure to memorize the textbook and all the studies in it (especially the ones he presents in his lecture slides) for the first two tests. The final I thought I bombed but ended up doing alright, but it is a totally different structure than the first two. Prepare like hell and over study and you will be fine. Also, don't Dutch knockout unless you are gonna get a 100 on the final.

No textbook really required. Remember the studies he mentions in class for midterms. Final is difficult but doable.

Not an easy class, but definitely doable if you're willing to study for the tests. Study the lecture slides diligently and you'll do well in the tests.

Lee Coppock is a great lecturer. He is awesome at keeping you engaged and uses a lot of unique devices and phrases to make sure you remember important stuff. He also tells pretty decent jokes and throws some Cage the Elephant songs in before lectures for good measure. Don't rely on the dutch knockout tho, bc his exam is actually pretty difficult even though it is multiple choice. Definitely take this class with him if you take it. He wrote the textbook and getting the information from him through two different mediums is huge at helping you understand and figure out what's important about macroeconomics.

Professor Coppock is a great professor and is able to engage 500 students at once during his lectures. The way he explains economics is very simple and straightforward and he always has interesting stories to help us understand the material. I will say that you MUST read his book and his lecture slides. Sometimes his test questions come from a random slide on his PowerPoint and that can lower the test scores. On the first test I primarily studied the big concepts and didn't focus on the smaller details, so I got an lower score than I wanted. However, for the next test I learned from the first one and made sure to study all the small examples and stories from class and did much better. He gives plenty of clicker questions so you should be able to get a 100 on those. My TA was really sweet, but her quizzes were a little hard. I studied really hard for them and did well, but for those who didn't they did poorly. However, the quizzes are only a small portion of your grade. I found the final exam very difficult and didn't do well on it, but because of my grades from the semester I managed to pull of an A-. I personally didn't rely on Dutch Knockout but I know kids who did poorly the entire class and got an A on the final. My piece of advice would be to try hard on every assignment and study the lecture slides for the final in order to do well. I know some people were saying they got curved down, and although that didn't happen to me, I will say it is possible for your grade to go down. This is why you have to make sure to do well the entire semester. Overall, it's a good class to take!

One of my favorite classes at UVA! I'd greatly recommend this to everyone at UVA, not just econ majors. Insanely informative about what you see in the news all the time about the economy. If you took micro with Elzinga, the class is structured very very similarly, and there is a Dutch knockout with this class as well.
