This was a fantastic course! Professor La Fleur is a super understanding and engaging professor who really cares about his students. The class is structured so the first half is more lectures and the second half is more spontaneous group presentations. Do the readings/films, participate in class, and you should be fine. The material is also really interesting, but mostly about people and their interactions with the environment. It's definitely not an environmental science course, which he tells you the first day. I highly recommend this class for anyone interested in African history or development!

I really loved this class and highly recommend others to take this class! We had readings due each class that we worked on in groups and talked to the rest of the class about them. Professor La Fleur is a great teacher and incredibly understanding. He makes the class interesting and creates a positive atmosphere for students. This has been one of my favorite classes I've taken at UVA and I only wish I could take this class again.
