(I took this course online.) This class covers some key tales from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and teaches students basic Middle English skills. We were graded on participation, four quizzes, two worksheets, and one 5-page essay. There is not much reading (~1 short story/wk). You will need to buy 1 copy of the Tales in order to have the same version as Fowler (although the text and translations exist free online).
Fowler is one of the best professors in the English department because her compassion for students steers her teaching. She is kind and patient, and she bends over backwards to help every student learn something and feel good about the semester. She is especially helpful to students who are not English majors, patiently teaching everyone new terms and ways to contribute to class. Her only expectation is that you end the class knowing more than when you began, and she will help you every step along the way with extra office hours, extra credit, etc. She was particularly kind to me in all of our interactions.
