This class was definitely interesting but felt rushed in some areas. Professor Chatterjee, in many cases, gave little to no context for unfamiliar topics in medieval Indian history but spent too much time on more familiar topics like the transatlantic/Indian ocean slave trade, abolition, and colonialism. It is clear that she is both passionate and an expert in her field but she regularly limited herself to one perspective, dismissing differing viewpoints as evidence of inadequate understanding of the subject matter– something that sometimes felt unfair and limited genuine discussion/debate. With that being said Professor Chatterjee is extremely friendly, always available to her students, a great lecturer, and makes the work and assignments very reasonable (most of your grade is based on weekly discussion posts, in class discussions, participation, and two in-class essays).
