Definitely the professor that you want to have if you are keen on taking an independent study in the religious studies department! The course is structured based on your interests, and Professor Nemec is very open to your inputs to help you select the reading material that you want. The main goal is to help you further your interest in a field like Hinduism.
Nemec does not expect you to write a paper at the end of the class but encourages it only if you are interested in producing a piece of writing. I ended up reading about 6 books for the course and producing a paper that was about 10 pages total. He also makes sure that the readings are not overwhelming and that they are just the right amount to discuss in the next meeting. I would recommend a weekly meeting style from my experience, as it helped me maximize my experience in this course. Nemec was also very flexible with his schedule and was quite accommodating of my class timings and also would follow up if there had to be any changes made with regards to meeting times.
Overall, this is a course that enhanced my understanding and also appreciation for the Hindu culture just by doing a variety of readings about different traditions in Hindu culture and going deeper into them by analyzing and discussing them through a modern lens.
