3Expect a highly structured and communicative class where all deadlines, expectations, and grading criteria are explicitly outlined from day one. The workload involves steady homework, quizzes, and speaking assessments typical of intermediate language sequences, but the material remains highly manageable thanks to thorough in-class reviews and abundant practice resources. Classroom sessions actively emphasize conversational practice and pair work, fostering a low-pressure environment where making mistakes is treated as part of the learning process. Grading is generally transparent and fair, though minor point deductions for grammatical precision are standard, and a small fraction of students felt the evaluation criteria could occasionally be rigid. You will find consistent support, clear organization, and a teaching approach that prioritizes steady, confidence-building language growth over extreme academic stress.

Professor Young gives us all of the materials needed to succeed in her class. There are a few daily assignments that allow you to stay sharp in your Spanish abilities and are relatively easy. Professor Young is very communicative about what is expected during the course and provides ample information for every assignment and project she gives you. She is very willing to help students improve their Spanish speaking when asked, and is very engaging in her teaching style!
Professor Young has been one of the most engaging and supportive professors I’ve had. She creates a classroom environment that is both welcoming and encouraging, which makes it much easier to participate and practice speaking Spanish without feeling intimidated. It’s clear that she genuinely cares about her students’ learning and success.
Her teaching style is honestly very organized and thoughtful. Lessons are well-structured and do a great job of explaining grammar concepts in a clear, manageable way. At the same time, the class is interactive and engaging, which makes the material feel practical rather than just memorization. What I appreciated most is how approachable and patient Professor Young is. She takes the time to answer questions, provide helpful feedback, and make sure students understand the material. You can tell she is passionate about teaching and about helping students improve their language skills.
Overall, I would highly recommend Professor Young to anyone taking Spanish 2010 at UVA. She makes the learning experience enjoyable, supportive, and genuinely rewarding.
I enrolled in Sarah’s class after reading reviews that made it seem like it would be enjoyable and similar to 1060. While the content itself is not particularly difficult, the main issue is the classroom environment she creates. Sarah is very difficult to work with and often comes across as though she wants her students to fail rather than succeed.
Although she does provide ample resources, her lectures feel disorganized and scattered. In-class activities are also not very collaborative. We are allowed to use our computers, but much of the class time is spent typing answers into PowerPoint or Microsoft Office rather than engaging in meaningful conversation practice. Personally, I would much rather spend that time speaking Spanish with classmates instead of struggling with formatting or figuring out how to type accents correctly.
On the few occasions when we do have speaking activities, she comes around to each group. Instead of listening and allowing students to practice, she frequently interrupts, speaks over us to correct mistakes, and does so in a way that feels unnecessarily harsh. It can feel discouraging rather than helpful. Additionally, she often avoids eye contact when students are speaking or when addressing them, which makes interactions feel rushed and insincere.
Additionally, her grading is very subjective and she follows a rubric more harshly than needed. When approached about scores she gets very defensive and does not acknowledge opinions that falter from her own.
Overall, her attitude can come across as dismissive and condescending. Rather than fostering a supportive learning environment, the atmosphere often feels tense and uncomfortable. I was hoping for a more engaging and encouraging experience, but unfortunately, that has not been the case.
Professor Young is SUPER nice and accommodating. I took her class fall semester of my 1st year and am so glad I did. Like most of everyone else, I took Spanish to fulfill the Arts and Sciences language requirement, and Professor Young is definitely the professor to take. She's very fair with her grading and actually cares for her students. I remember before every class she would ask students how they were doing and actually cared about our lives. In addition to Professor Young being extremely kind, she was incredibly good at explaining things. Her class felt very personable and was a great kickoff to my college experience.
I was initially nervous to take SPAN 2020 because the increased speaking element intimidated me, but Professor Young creates a supportive environment that encourages growth and learning from mistakes. Throughout the class, I became more comfortable experimenting with the language and pushing through discomfort to improve as a speaker. She guides students with thoughtful questions and gentle corrections that build critical thinking around word choice and grammar. Completing homework before class made sessions more engaging and productive. Professor Young’s patience, encouragement, and genuine investment in her students make learning enjoyable. I highly recommend her class to anyone looking to strengthen their Spanish in a positive, motivating environment.
Professor Young was an amazing professor. She was extremely organized and understanding. The set-up for the class is like any other Spanish class at UVA. There are online assignments for homework, quizzes, exams, and projects. All assignments are pretty easy to do well on, although she can be a tough grader. She is very particular when it comes to certain things like grammar, vocab, and will take off 1-2 points here and there. With there being so many assignments, it was great how on top of due dates Professor Young was. She would send out email reminders with clear instructions and due dates. Overall, would definitely recommend taking a Spanish course with her.
I took SPAN 2010 during my first semester at UVA, and I hadn't taken a Spanish class since the fall of my sophomore year of high school. I was super nervous, but from the first day, Professor Young made it clear that this course would be okay. She kept the course extremely structured, which helped me a lot, as all of the expectations for each class were made very clear. I felt very prepared for quizzes, exams, and the speaking tests. I never felt I would get in trouble for getting a question wrong in Spanish. There is online textbook grammar homework for each class, as well as a longer final project. Both were easy to manage. I know the 2000-level Spanish gradescale is a bit high, but with a little effort outside of class, it's really easy to do well. I would highly recommend this class and specifically Professor Young!
Prof. Young is such a wonderful professor and person! She has such a genuine passion for teaching Spanish and it really shows in her engagement with her students and the way she conducts her class. I took her class at 8 am; despite the class being very early, I was always welcomed with a joyful envionrment and an engaging lecture. This class does require a considerable amount of outside work (homework assignments, readings, etc.) but Prof. Young is very accomodating and always willing to help if difficulty arrises. She is also very quick to respond to emails and help reschedule quizzes/exams due to extenuating circumstances. I loved being in her class and wish I could take another class under her! One of the most caring professors I have learned under. Highly recommend!!
This class was awesome! I really enjoyed it and felt that I learned a lot and grew in my Spanish abilities. Definitely take if you are looking for a fun class where you will develop a good Spanish foundation in an enjoyable environment.
