I absolutely loved this class. I was scared at first because Carlos didn't have any reviews and I also had never taken a Spanish course at UVA yet, but this class was amazing. Carlos makes it known that he wants you to do well and that he is always here to help students. He grades exams very fairly and does a lot of review for them beforehand. He cares a lot about participation but doesn't care whether or not you're right. I definitely recommend taking this class if he is teaching it. Also, the homework that you turn in are graded based on completion, and the other homework in the textbook is just practicing different grammar structures, and he never checks those. This is definitely my favorite class so far and I really hope I get to take another one with him again.
