I still think everyone in the Fall 2025 class should be bumped up half a letter grade for training the AI used for this class. It was so frustrating to study for hours just to receive exams that were minimally related to the class. It felt like we were set up for failure. I was hoping at the end the professors would recognize that being a trial run class means you need to give the students helping you some slack. Unfortunately we just got the short end of the stick. All my friends and I could do was laugh because there was nothing we could do to avoid the inevitable bad grade at the end. Even the TAs admitted the class was “cooked”.

This was the worst class I have ever taken at UVA. It relied entirely on AI, which meant you didn't learn anything and the exams had no structure to what you had to know. Scoring well was just based on luck. It's upsetting because this is the class you have to take as a biochem major, and it's the subject you should have the most interest and knowledge in, but Gahlmann and Columbus ruined it. If there is any other professor teaching it, take it with them because these professors couldn't be bothered to teach it correctly. There were AI homeworks after every class and 3 exams and a final.

I've taken numerous classes with Dr. Gahlmann and he is obsessed with AI and forces you to use it in class instead of actually properly teaching the material. Besides the moral and ethical issues with this it mean you don't actually learn things and this creates really uneven learning standards and an unstructured class. For the biochem class this meant several times material showed up on exams that I didn't know I needed to know and had never been taught.
