Review Summary Updated April 07, 2026

Expect a fast-paced, immersive environment where the professor speaks almost entirely in Spanish and expects regular class participation. The workload features plenty of smaller assignments and a final project that carry far more weight than the lightly graded exams, so consistent weekly effort beats last-minute cramming. Since formal grammar teaching is minimal during lectures, you will need to regularly attend office hours, use all shared study materials, and apply the detailed feedback on your work. The instructor is highly understanding and flexible with deadlines when communicated with, but earning a top grade still requires steady dedication and proactive use of the resources she offers.

Really enjoyed taking her class! Her teaching style was amazing and I genuinely felt myself get much more comfortable with the language throughout the semester. I came into the class to fulfill my language requirement and was a bit surprised by the workload at first, since A&S requires it if you do not come in with credit. However, it definitely got better throughout the semester, and if you participate, it helps your grade a whole bunch. There is a good amount of assignments besides the tests, so doing well on other things can definitely offset your exam scores. As long as you are willing to do the homework and put in the effort, you should get a good grade in this class. She's also very understanding if you ever have a large workload, as long as you communicate it with her.

As with all Spanish courses at UVA, this class is entirely too much busy work but the second half definitely improves as you work more on your project and less on content. For the most part if you put in effort you'll get decent grades on assignments. The 2 'midterms' are only worth 5% of your grade each and then the final exam is only 10% but I found the final to be the hardest. The rest of your grade comes from a lot of other smaller assignments throughout the year and then a final project which is worth 15%.

As far as Professor Hogg, she was very nice and understanding throughout the semester. She talks about 95% in Spanish and will cold call on people for everyone to participate. She does work to make sure everyone understands the concepts. I think she graded a little harsher than other professors from what I've heard but not totally sure. We do work in groups a lot in class which I enjoyed and made learning easier.

This class was hard. I went in expecting it to be a cake walk and that was far from the truth. I got a C- on the first test, however I was able to bring my grade up to an A. This class is doable, you just need to know what to expect. Professor Hogg is incredible and so willing to help you outside of class. I went to office hours at least once a week and it made all the difference in the world. Use her Quizlets. Study in advance and use ALL materials available. Take the points where you can get them and go to her for advice if you need new study tactics to try! Overall, this is a wonderful Spanish class with q wonderful teacher. Just be ready to work!

Professor Hogg is really nice and very accomodating. You actually speak in Spanish in your class and she encourages cultural conversations. It's hard to get an "A" but that's the same across the Spanish department. She gives a lot of feedback about assignments and there's not too much homework. She grades tests fairly quickly. #tCFfall22

Had to take this class for language requirements, and I'm glad I took it with Professor Hogg. She is super nice and understanding and a great teacher. Definitely willing to help and gives you great feedback on your work. The homework and tests are the same across all SPAN 2020 classes.

If you have to take SPAN 2020, you can't go wrong with taking it with Prof. Hogg. She's nice, pretty funny, and reasonably understanding about late work and assignments. She is also there to help you if you needed it. She doesn't really teach grammar in class but she does do Kahoot reviews and is very helpful outside of class if you seek it out. Post-COVID the class got really easy due to the limitations of Collab testing (no short answers / long answers on the exams anymore) but content of the units felt pretty repetitive (a lot of si clauses and the various uses of the subjunctive tense). The EPortfolio is slightly more work than other semesters, but Prof. Hogg is pretty lenient with due dates. Overall an easy A- (Anything under a 96 is an A- lol so I wouldn't count on getting an A if you really need it)
